Hello awesome blog readers, I need your help!
Well, as I mentioned in a previous post, I need to get a summer job while my current teaching job is on hiatus during the summer. So from now until August 10th, I am out of work. I only need something that can make me about $1200 until then, because that's what we'll need to remain comfortable. I know I have nearly two whole months and that's not a TON of money, but I'm already freaking out because I don't have any job whatsoever at the moment.
Here's the thing: I do not want to work in the restaurant industry again. Long story short, it stresses me out to the point where I have anxiety attacks on the way to work. I know it's the most logical thing to do, as I have serving experience in busy restaurants and it has the most money-making potential, but it's going to have to be a last resort for me. It's just not worth the misery. Not to me, anyway.
But now I just don't know what to do. I've pursued nannying a little bit, by registering as a free member at Care.com and by posting an ad on Craigslist, but nothing is really coming about it yet. I know I could register for sites like Sittercity.com, but I don't want to pay the $100+ fee it costs to do that.
What else is there? I just want a summer job, not a full career, so I don't know what place would hire me. I'm considering applying for a job at a bookstore, I've considered doing "extra" work in movies, and I've even thought about selling some of our stuff off on eBay, but I'm still just not sure and I feel like time is running out. I wish I could make money blogging!
Has anyone out there ever found themselves in a similar predicament? Any advice?

I don't know what's available in your area, but I do understand the anxiety of waitressing. I used to have nightmares that the entire restaurant would be full and I would be there by myself. I was always scared on the way to work and then everything (usually) was fine once I got into my shift. It does make a lot of money with tips and everything, but I'm like you, I will never go back unless absolutely necessary.
have you thought about retail? you get perks there too! i have a friend who works for neimans and she gets some pretty nice commissions...
and i totally understand about the waitressing thing. i only did that for a summer, and it was my LEAST favorite job ever.
I would try retail places. Usually you can make that amount in that time frame.
I work at a school during the year so I understand the need to still make more money in the summer. I called a couple of daycare places in my area and asked if I could get hired as a sub and they took me on for the summer. They also let me post several fliers saying I was looking for a summer nanny job and babysitting from time to time. I didn't take less than 10.00 an hour and when I made enough I just quit.
Not for sure what you LIKE...but I know that they have summer programs at gyms and YMCA and such. I'm not a BIG fan of working out...but I've worked for an exercise place and loved it. The people were great and it was super fun! (I'm a teacher so some summers I work...others I don't!)
Ok, so what about working behind a make-up counter. I think they pay something like $13/hr. plus comission. And hello free and discounted make-up!
Now, you know CCF pays their hostess staff well. So you wouldn't be dealing with the craziness of waiting. Just an option....but I'm voting for make-up!!!
Retail is always a good summer option. Plus if you work at a place like Nordy's or Coach you get a discount on things you like, but that could be bad haha.
Or you could work at a store like Janie and Jack, where you will be paid more because its expensive, plus you won't be tempted to buy things because you don't have a baby.
We are so similar! I HATE serving, but it's looking like my best option. Good luck!
What about retail?? I also worked as a receptionist at a salon and it was the best job. Not only did I get free hair services and manicures and pedicures, but I made commission off the products sold. It definitely wasn't a bad gig...maybe something you could check out?
Thank you all for the suggestions! I think tomorrow I'm going to go to the new mall close to my house and see if any of the stores are hiring!
AVONlady, I really like your idea of calling up local daycares to see if they need help. I like the notion of only working Mon-Fri! Haha.
ur a pe teacher!! you can be a personal trainer... you dont really need qualifications... just have them do jumping jacks lol
or... maccas?!
extras work would be fun! then you could celebrity stalk for me at the same time!!
I worked at a vet clinic during any college breaks as a Kennel Technician. It was really fun for me because I love animals but its not for people who can't handle poop, pee, and blood.
I also worked for a temp agency one summer. Office Team (Office type work), Account Temps (Accounting/Finance work), and Robert Half Company (Computer work) are throughout USA.
How hard! Good luck on finding something.
Bummer. I'm sure you will find something! I'm in no position to offer up advice. As you know I quit my job this morning. Now I'll have to figure out how to supplement my take home pay of $3400.
Friends keep saying --it's ok you're married. Yes- I am and yes my hubs makes a great salary...but 3400 a month extra makes a big difference in our lives. I walked out because I hated my job--but I still need income and like you-- I don't want to be working somewhere that will make my life miserable!!! Something will work out for the both of us!!! Good luck girl!
PS...Thanks for your wonderful comments!!! They mean alot to me.
ugh don't do retail. its the worst...unless of course you enjoy folding and refolding the same shirt seventeen times an hour
Ever thought of daycare? Make ok wages, never have to work nights or weekends, plus they feed you. It is exhausting- but can be rewarding.
What about your local parks and rec programs? I'm a PE teacher as well and during the summer I head the sports and activities portion of local summer camps. It's 9-1, Mon-Fri so it's the perfect schedule!
I was going to suggest nannying but I see you've already thought of that! What about retail? Check out if your favourite store is hiring...employees usually get pretty good discounts.
what about doing temp work? try appleone or something similar. you answer phones and do office work but can sometimes maks $12-15 an hour.
Ok....this isnt creepy or anything....I found your blog just looking through other blogs and thought your husband looked familiar. So I asked my friend I went to school with and she knew who he was, went to same high school. Ok to the point, if you still live near the area of our high school, I may be of some sort of help, or actually it would be helping me too. Definitely not the whole $1200 but again, some help. You can email me at trish143216@yahoo.com
** I just re-read my last few lines and I sound like a telemarketer, haha, promise I'm not!
I think in a normal economy, you would find a summer job no prob. However, right now... not so much fun. Good luck, I hope you find something!
